Corriere della Sera - Italy
Church open to criticism

Pope Benedict XVI called on the more that 60,000 visitors to the mass held in Berlin's Olympic Stadium on Thursday evening not to leave the Church despite the abuse scandals and other problems. Prior to the mass he had voiced understanding for the indignation provoked by the cases of abuse in Church circles. This is testimony to the openness of the Pope, writes the liberal-conservative daily Corriere della Sera: "Respecting the opinion of others is nothing new for the Pope. As demonstrated once again yesterday in Berlin, openness and an ability to sympathise with others are characteristic of this man who grew up with the diversity of opinions prevalent at German universities. They must be attributed to the series of statements by the Pope in which he has repeatedly stressed the positive role of the media in criticising the abuse scandal." (23/09/2011)
